The web these days is being used as a tool to share. Be it information, photos, music or videos. People from all ages publish photos on the web without realising the ‘danger’ that it can bring. It might seem fun when you are 14 to publish photos that were taken at the party last saturday. It is also very clear to see that you are completely drunk which also counts for the photographer considering that every picture is very shaken, blurred and it is hard to tell what exactly is being photographed. You share these photos with your friends and you have a laugh about it. But the thing is, that once it is on the web it is hard to control who views your photos. Your friends share it with their friends, maybe they share it with their friends. Now it is out there somewhere. Then suddenly you turn 37 and run for mayor. People will find your photos but now it is not as funny as when you where 14. It could be that because of this you damage your career. This may be a quite extreme example, but the essence of the story is true.
Think about Youtube; I’m guessing that 2 out of every 100 videos is one that is really embarrasing for someone. The person starring in the video can’t remove it, so it remains there with unforeseeable consequences. So it can be fun to share things on the internet, but it can invade someones privacy and sometimes it is difficult to remove the content completely. If you want to share photos or videos with your friends, I suggest you invite them to your home and show it to them. This way you know who gets to see it. And you spend the time you would have spent on publishing everything with your friends, having a great time.
MySpace, finishing 11th in the popularity race, is one of the older social networking sites out there: it has been on the web since 2001. Following the web 2.0 trend it is a place were users can publish whatever it is they want. After signing up, you receive your own page which you can shape into what you see fit. But there is something that sets MySpace apart from other social networking sites.
A great number of artists have a MySpace profile where they publish their latest tracks. But they take it even further than that. They use the MySpace page to its fullest potential. Publishing biographies, discographies and philosophies. There is room for a gig agenda and any videos related to the artist in question. Beginning artists also use MySpace as a tool to spread their music in the hope to increase their popularity. Therefore, MySpace is known for its wide range of musical profiles. And opposite of most of the social networking sites, the content of every profile is accesible for any viewer, be it a MySpace member or the casual browser.
Starting 2009, the Myspace site has introduced a new feature. Every week they follow a different celebrity in their daily life, publishing the footage on the site. Viewers of these clips also have a chance in winning a prize that varies per week. These new impulses are needed because the use of MySpace is slowly declining due to the emergence of new social networking sites that take part in some sort of hype.
Hyves is a Dutch social networking site. It is the most visited site of Dutch cybersurfers after Google. Not only is it the most visited site, it has more members than Dutch Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter users combined. Around 9 million – 57% – Dutchies have a Hyves account .
Hyves is a place where you publish photo’s in self created photoalbums, share videos with other members, upload music and basically communicate with other Hyves users. Other users can become friends with you, enabling contact. You can leave small messages on someones account or write an email in which you explain the world in 5 pages. There are around 100 emoticons which you can use in one of your messages or emails. Many users think it is important how many hyves buddies a user has. The number of friends you have is displayd next to your username. Therefore, you will be approached by a lot of people that you will never speak to in real life or on hyves. But they look for people they can add to their friends so that the number next to their username is larger than life.
Next to recreational use, Hyves also has a value to companies or starting bands that seek that hard to attain fame. For they can create a Hyves account where they display their product; the company can upload little clips for instance and the band can upload their music and display their gig agenda.
There I am, waiting for the bus to pick me up and bring me to class. I arrived early so I wouldn’t miss it. When the bus finally arrived I felt that I deserved to get on first, because I’ve been waiting in the cold the longest. But than this lady cut in line and quickly found a seat in the back where she didn’t had to sit next to a stranger. So I followed her and decided to sit next to her, just to make things uncomfortable between us.
The whole ride the woman didn’t even look at me, just staring at her shoes. I noticed how other people walked in the bus and tried to find a single seat and if that wasn’t available, they even preferred to stand through the whole ride. This got me thinking. I felt the urgent need to mess things up.
When I got on the train, every four-person booth was occupied by one single person. So I sat down next to someone, not opposite, not diagonally but directly next to him. This made him so uncomfortable that he actually got up and left the booth before the train even left the station. Just because I violated the Law of Personal Space. I felt great and continued in doing so for an entire month. People reacted in many different ways and I was happier than a dwarf among midgets.
Near the end of April, I was almost done with changing the world. But the last time I did it, completely changed my life. I saw this beautiful drop dead gorgeous lady in red sitting there. I sat down next to her and we got to talking. Now I know what you’re thinking; you think I met “the one” and ran off and married her. Well it turned out differently. Turns out the woman had lice…which were now partying on my head. I had to shave of all of my hair, leaving me completely bold and awesomeless. Marking day one of my depression.
